Park Updates

As of May 29th, 2020

In response to updated recommendations from the CDC, the Governor’s recent announcement and out of an abundance of caution, the City is announcing the following:

Parks

Bathrooms at City Park north, Veterans Complex, and Wings Park between Diamonds 2/3 are open for use.  Bathrooms are cleaned and sanitized once a day, use at your own risk. One patron at a time in the bathrooms, continue social distancing of 6 feet or more at all times.

Aquatic Center

The City of Oelwein has decided that the Oelwein Family Aquatic Center will not open this season due to COVID-19.

Shelter Reservations

The City is still not taking any shelter reservations for any parks at this time due to COVID-19.

Campground

The campground will be open to the public May 9th.  Alternating campsites can be used, the shower house can be used at own risk.  Social distancing is expected and no visitors are allowed in the campground.  Tent camping will not be allowed a this time. See the campground tab for all established regulations and fees.

Aquatics

At this time we are not accepting swimming registrations and season passes until a final decision on the season is made.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Parks

Open at this time while following the 6 feet social distance guidelines. All parks green spaces (no groups over 10 people), Playgrounds and ballfields are closed. The park bathrooms are not open at this time so please plan accordingly, and drinking fountains are not turned on. 

Cemetery

Garbage cans are out and available for citizens to dispose of old flowers and decorations at their leisure.

Parks

The dog park and skate park are closed . No gatherings of 10 or more people are allowed.  Patrons must follow CDC guidelines for illness and social distancing when using the park system.

Oelwein Celebration

The Oelwein celebration's Inc. committee made the decision to cancel the 2020 Oelwein Celebration.

Cemetery

Due to the tornado on march 28th there are trees available to take for firewood.  If interested in taking storm damaged trees, please email us to set an appointment under the "contact us" tab.

As things continue to charge with COVID-19 we will adapt as needed.  Thank you for your patience and understanding in these challenging times.  Please keep up to date and follow the Department of Public Health and CDC guidelines through the COVID-19 link above. The Park Department received $1.175 million dollar grant to build future trails in Oelwein.  The City of Oelwein is in need of community support each year for the next four years to complete the trail system as planned.  The City is always looking for people to assist in our future endeavors though volunteering and fiscal support.

Oelwein Municipal Urban Trail System

The trail system currently offers 4.2 miles of walking/biking trails throughout the city. Starting at the Oelwein Family Aquatic Center, the trail winds south through Reidy Park and past Platt Park then crosses 10th Street SE. The trail then traverses around to the exterior of the Oelwein Industrial Park before ending at the Veteran's Memorial Sports Complex. Starting in the southeast part of Redgate Park this trail winds though the wooded area of the southwest quadrant of Oelwein, before it skirts the City of Oelwein utility shops. The trail crosses 6th Ave SW and skirts a creek before ending at Levin Park.
